Don Garlits has been racing Drag Pack Challengers for awhile now but last year at SEMA he debuted his new Drag Pack 800HP drag strip king. Wow! When I spoke to Don about the car I just jumped at the chance at replicating in the Johnny Lightning line. Garlits was the first drag racer to officially surpass the 170mph, 180mph, 200mph, 240mph, 250mph, 260mph, and 270mph marks in the quarter mile. I think Don's recent racing career needed to be officially recognized in diecast and we think this a great way to salute him.

Johnny Lightning & Cherry Bomb

Johnny Lightning will teaming this year to release a replica of Cherry Bomb's "Disturbing the Peace" 1968 Project Camaro. It blends today's radical technology with 60's Muscle. We are pretty excited to be working with such a great brand that shares the same passion for muscle cars as we do. Hoping to include this Camaro in Forever 64 release 22.

Camaro IROC

Working on some new vehicle plans for 2013 today and planning for some new featured vehicle skus. Hoping to include some new castings from the 80s and 90s and since I was stripping my IROC for paint this week, I thought I would shoot and measure the entire car in hopes to replace casting #484. This casting is planned for JL2.0 R13, which will be a Beat the Heat release. Other castings I am looking to redo are the '70s Challenger, and C4 Corvette. Of course, we'll add new castings to the mix but want to get to a lower price point and some of the olders castings are too expensive. Retooling them gets us a more accurate casting as well as a lower price.

Johnny Lightning Jeep Wagoneer

Just received shot samples of the new JL Jeep Wagoneer. Wow, this casting made my jaw drop when I first saw it. I think it turned out amazing and I want to send a big thank you out to Wagonmasters for giving us access to their trucks. The Wagoneer will be released in the JL2.0 and F64 lines but I am going to hold the first release for the JL2.0 line. This casting has an optional roof rack and opening tailgate. Looking for suggestions on color schemes for the first release.

JL Bruce Larson Dragonsnake

Just received production samples today on Bruce Larson's Cobra. The Costilow/Larson "Dragonsnake" was driven by Hall of Famer Bruce Larson and competed in NHRA's A/SP, AA/SP, B/SP and C/SP classes. It set all new records in the '65 season and won the NHRA Springnationals, Winternationals and US Indy Nationals in '65.
This will be the only car in release 11 that will have a Lightning Strike.

Johnny Lightning JL2.0 and The Car

Happy Halloween! I was cleaning up in my toy room at home over the weekend and found a particular "Car" that I have been searching for for almost 2 years now. Back in 2003, I was working on 1:18 scale American Muscle, Racing Champions MINT, Hot Rods line and our licensed 1:64 Entertainment asst, which included the Munsters, Smokey & the Bandit, Dukes, Dazed & Confused, Gone in 60 Seconds, and many others. I began tooling on a movie car that never quite made it into production, the 1:64 Car, from the 1977 flick. I had already completed tooling on the 1:18 scale version and it was natural to do in 1:64, however, the 1:64 scale line was discontinued and the Car never got released. You're looking at the only full die cast version in existence, sitting next to a preproduction sample of the new JL2.0 R11 Phil Bonner Galaxie, for size comparison.

Johnny Lightning International Pickup

The International Pickup is coming along nicely. I made some revisions to the cab area before tooling started. This pickup will see duty in our Forever 64 line, JL2.0 line and our ERTL Ag line. The first release will be in the Forever 64 line and shortly after will see action in the Ertl line where it will feature a diecast body and chassis. All new rims and tires will debuted on the model as well. One unique feature about this casting is that it will have a commercial rear bumper giving it a more rugged look.

TOMICA and JL update

Here is a little update on JL and TOMICA...working on Forever 64 and JL2.0 calendar for 2012 and planning out TOMICA releases. Last week I got in Forever 64 samples for R20 and JL2.0 samples from R10. This Vista Cruiser is from R10 and I am excited to squeeze it into an assortment because I had so many requests at Lightning Fest to see the Vista Cruiser again. It's coming! The TOMICA line has been fun and challenging at times to dive into. I have started the process of looking into what castings I can release in the U.S. based on licensing rights, U.S. standards and casting condition. Hoping to bring some vintage models to the line!

Polizei VW Transporter

Check out this Polizei VW Transporter from Forever 64 release 16. I really get excited anytime I can squeeze in some police cars but this Transporter may be one of my favorite Forever 64 releases I have done to date. This assortment also includes another VW Transporter that is red with a white side and some could say is movie inspired.
I may have an opportunity to put Tomica castings in the JL line. Let me know your thoughts and what cars you want to see. I appreciate the feedback.

Ford Lightning Pickup

Just got in the first decorated samples of the new Ford Lightning pickup. Overall, I am pretty happy with it. The fit of of the body is the best I have seen on a JL casting. This black Lightning will debut in Forever 64 release 15. Look for white lightnings that have white tires and rims. Good luck on the hunt!

Jim Reed Impala stocker R14

In 1959, Jim Reed's '59 Impala stocker pulled out an upset victory over many better known Grand National drivers to win the Southern 500. His bat-winged '59 was powered by a 348 V8 and was one of the first stock cars to race with Goodyear tires. His average speed was over 111mph! It was a pleasure to work with the Reed family on this upcoming F64 release 14 Impala.
Release 14 has some other great additions like the next Fireball Tim release- Lethal Bad Mood GTX, Jake Neal's dirt modified, Spoilers GTO and a special Boss Mustang collaboration with automotive artist, Danny Whitfield. I am really excited for the Boss 429 release because Danny Whitfield will be offering exclusive JL automotive prints of the artwork that appears on the blister card. More details will be released in the next few weeks.

Dirt Modified

I showed you some test shot pics awhile back of our new dirt modified that we'll be rolling out in the Forever 64 line. Our first release will be in F64 R14 and will be Jake Neal's race car. This modified will have rubber tires and we have the option to do plastic tires and even a diecast chassis. It's been a pleasure to work with Jake and his team on this upcoming release. Started on a new 1:64 casting today, the '68 International 1200 Pickup. Jeep Wagoneer

The Jeep Wagoneer will be joining our 1:64 Cherokee later this year. Right now, I am only planning for the stock version but it will have a full die cast body and chassis, opening hood and fold down tailgate. We'll debut in the JL2.0 line and shortly after introduce into Forever 64. A big thanks goes out to Wagonmaster for helping us on the reference photos.

Diecastspace Sprint Car

Check out this outlaw! Johnny Lightning will be in Vegas at the Super Convention next month to show off this special release of the Diecastspace sprint car. I thought it would be a cool way to thank CJ and his staff for helping to bring collectors together and for their continued support. These will be part of our Forever 64 line release 13. I had some questions already on why the car number is 51. I have to be honest about this one. I'm a big football fan and being from Chicago you automatically grow up loving the Bears. A few months back I had the opportunity to meet one of the toughest guys to ever play the game, Dick Butkus. I had him sign a JL car for me and thought the number 51 fit for Diecastspace. Tough, cool guys!

Beat the Heat Olds

The first samples of Jim Luckett's Oldsmobile came in over the holidays and I am finally getting around to reviewing them. The samples looks amazing and Jim is pretty happy with the car too. Jim was nice enough to bring his car out to our office last year to photograph and when I first heard it start up I think my heart skipped a beat. What a sweet sound!
The JL car rolls on racers edge wheels and has a full die cast body and chassis. Come out to Lightning Fest this year and see Jim's car in person. Mark your calendars now, July 15-16 in Dyersville, IA.

Bobby is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame and in '98 was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers. Received the shot samples of the new Chevy Citation and they look amazing. I have plenty of options planned too from the X-11 to the base model with optional hatch window louvers. There are two wheels options, two hood options and two chassis variations. I have plans for a Spoilers release but sorry Zingers fans, the Zinger was not in the budget. Look for this casting in Spring 2011.

I'm planning for some pretty exciting exclusives for 2011 and will be introducing the VW Transporter into the Forever 64 line. This casting will allow me to add some new depth to the releases. Look for police, rescue, Black with Flames and twist on Hollywood on Wheels using casting 916. The first release of the corpse delivery in Forever 64 is coming soon! I am very excited to show off this Mustang from JL2.0 R5. The actual car is owned and raced by Beat the Heat president, Tom Brown. Tom is the '99 and '06 BTH World Champion and it is an honor to work on his car. His 347cid Mustang has run a track best 10.29 @ 129mph. This past week, I have been talking to a few different drivers who are excited to get their cars replicated and I really think this casting will sit nicely next to the Sprint car and vintage modifieds I have planned for the near future. Working out the details to release a series of cars driven by Dick Brannan. Dick has had an amazing drag racing career and its an honor to be working with him again on some new Johnny Lightning releases. Dick worked at Ford in Dearborn during the sixties as a development engineer for the Special Vehicles Department and also helped form the Ford Drag Racing Team. His '63 Galaxie 427 was the first Ford in history to hold an NHRA record in the Super Stock class.

Spoke with the Harrell family earlier this week and plans are under way for a '69 Camaro ZL1 to be released in the JL2.0 line. Art has been completed on the car and the plan is to design a full custom packaging with photos of Dick and a history on the car. Looking forward to this one!

Just got in some samples of JL2.0 release 4. This Tim Flock Fabulous Hudson Hornet is my favorite along with Billy Hill's '63 Galaxie. Billy was nice enough to bring his car to Lightning Fest this past July to show off his Beat the Heat car. Look for more photos of Billy's replica on JL's Facebook.
Trying to decide on some different wheels for the Hudson. I might use the stock rubber tires and rims I used on this car from the Mint line.

Just received my production samples today! The long awaited release of Rosco's Patrol car is almost near. The new Monaco, with diecast body and chassis, will debut in JL2.0 R2. It features an opening hood with detailed 440 V8, new lightbar and new police wheels. Look for White Lightnings that have white rims and white tires.

76 Corvette

By now, most of you have seen our new Rally wheel that was more recently used on the '75 Corvette in the Walmart exclusive set. The old Rally wheel, MC-4, will be retired.
We do have another new rim, a 8-slot mag, that will make it first showing in R11 of F64. This was the original aluminum wheel GM announced as being available in '73 but due to some quality problems GM recalled. The new wheel offered in '76 was the same design but was produced by Kelsey-Hayes.
In addition to the new slotted mags on this Vette is a luggage rack to haul around all those cases of JLs.

JL 32 Ford Delivery

We'll commemorate release 50 of the 1:24 scale Muscle cars line with this '32 Ford Sedan Delivery. The 24 scale line was launched in 2005 and I am excited to be able to introduce some castings that have traveled along with me in my career. I first worked on this '32 Ford casting in 1997 and introduced into the Racing Champions Hot Rod line later in the year. This unmarked '77 Monaco in light metallic brown will join the two Beat the Heat releases in R11 of F64 I showed you a few days ago. I always say you can never have enough police cars in an asst so R11 will have three and R12 will also have three, along with a '57 Chevy ambulance.
R12 will have one BTH release, a '71 Chevelle owned by Jim Harris. Jim's Chevelle is black and white with a flaming pro stock scoop, red roof mounted lightbar and big rear slicks.

Sprint for Johnny Lightning

The sprint will be on shortly for the next Walmart exclusive set, which hits stores in about 2 weeks. This new sidekick assortment includes 12 cars and each are packaged in a new black packaging with the JL logo. There are 36 cars in each sidekick and will be available at all Walmarts, including some that do not normally carry the regular JL Forever 64 line. Some of my favorites in the assortment are the the JL Sprint, yellow AMX, a bright orange '70 Chevelle and a '70 Cuda race car. White Lightnings have white tires and white rims. Check out these two new Beat the Heat releases, the '71 Buick GS and the '81 Chevy Malibu. Both will make their debut in Forever 64 R11. The Buick is covered in metallic orange paint with black stripes, a pro stock scoop and clear lightbar. The Malibu is painted in classic black and white, a blue interior and blue lightbar.

Made a trip to the junkyard yesterday looking for some Project in Progress inspiration as well as look for some parts for my Camaro. The postal Jeep was a suprise and they wanted $1500. My favorite discovery had to be the '78 Dodge Trans-Van. Most of the interior was complete too! The red GTA was a suprise to see because it could of been saved so I couldn't leave behind the 16" wheels that were laying there next to the car so I picked them up for $25 bucks each. They need a good home, not a burial.

Check out these two new sets. The JD set is only available now at JD dealerships and the Ford set can be found at New Holland dealerships. The '55 Ford Panel Delivery matches the paint on the Ford 640 tractor perfectly and the '59 El Camino has a two tone green and white paint scheme to match the JD 630.

Forever 64 R7

Several collectors and customers of ours have noticed that cases of R7 were resealed so I wanted to personally address this issue. The reason each carton of R7 was opened was an age grade and component number sticker had to be added to the corners of the packaging before the product shipped from China. No White Lightnings were removed or added so I hope you can be understanding when purchasing sealed cases from your local hobby distributor. This new Scout was shown at Lightning Fest and looks minty fresh. You'll see it in F64 R10. However, this one will fight for attention with some other cool releases. There's a Black with Flames Monte Carlo SS, Goodyear Panel Delivery, an Army '50 Olds and a 70 Mustang Mach 1 painted bright red. The Mach 1 has a Lightning Strike release that has bright red molded tires.

Hoping to get the revisions done on the Cherokee tool model before the Fest. I know you are excited to see Russ(Milezone). Don't plan on seeing any stock versions, even though I would love to make a version of my daily driver, because I am building the fender flares right into the body. However, there will be at least 6 different custom configurations of the truck with different bumpers, brush bars, optional snorkel intake and mild and wild lift kits. Not only does the hood open but I am making an opening rear liftgate. Plan on seeing all new mud tires with two rim options.

Got a little suprise delivered to the office today, the Chevy Citation tool model. It came a week early and it looks amazing. I hope to have it on display at Lightning Fest unless I get some free time to review and return to China early. Needs a little more chassis detailing but as it stands now, there will be two hood options, two wheels options for the JL2.0 releases and optional rear window louvers.

Fall Guy Pickup

You won't see this ERTL casting in the JL line but someday I would like to do a lifted 80s GMC. I was looking through some of my collection last night and came across this ERTL Fall Guy pickup. Colt was probably very proud at the time this casting was released but as I looked closely at the lack of detailing it really made me appreciate the level of detail JL cars have today and excited to be a part of it. I still think this pickup is cool as it reminds of my childhood and watching the show but how would Colt Seavers drive this with no steering wheel? For as old as the truck is the paint quality is not bad at all and has a nice brown metallic flake finish. If I get around to doing a remake of this casting I will try hard to make a working suspension so we can replicate those huge jumps.

MPC White Lightning Firebird

I thought I would take a look in our archive for some inspiration when designing the 67 Firebird in R6 of Forever 64 and I came across the '69 White Lightning Firebird MPC kit. Thought the waving ribbon/flames would look pretty cool on the '67 too. I like the side exhaust on the bird but those t-tops have to go!
Keep an eye out for R6 as it has some great releases like the Beat the Heat Camaro owned by Dean Mirra and a 2-tone red and gray Hudson Hornet. White Lightnings have a white chassis and white rims and there is one Lightning Strike release, the American Glory '70 Superbird.

This white ’84 Trans Am is scheduled for release 7 of Forever 64. I’m a big fan of the T/A so plan to see this casting get a lot of duty in the coming months. I have plans to do the ’85 and ’86 and a few special editions. Since I’m talking about the Trans Am, check out this footage from Talladega where a guy steals the 1986 Trans Am pace car and goes for a joyride around the track. Cuff’em and stuff’em!

'73 Vega

Just got in a sample of a F64 release that I was pretty excited to see. The Millionth Vega. On May 17, 1973 the millionth Chevy Vega was produced which was a bright orange GT with white sport stripes. A special limited edition "Millionth Vega" was produced by Chevy replicating the milestone and now it's JL's turn. Over a two month period, 6,500 of these replicas were made and we'll be doing the same production run. However, don't look for the bring orange carpet on our release.

Lightning Patrol

Some of you may remember Lightning Patrol R2, which never came to be. The assortment included this Zinger Challenger patrol car, Chevy Monza, '09 Challenger and a Viper ACR. I came across this one on my desk as I was looking for a couple rare pieces for the Lightning Fest charity auction. All of the cars were ready to go to production but this was my favorite. I really like the Hoosier imprint on the hard plastic wheels and I had planned to release with no light bar, which bothers me a little now. What's a police car with no light bar? I also added a black wash over the engine to give it a more sleeper feel. Do you guys think it would still make a good release? Or want to see in the auction?

Demo Derby

I have a Demo Derby release planned for R3 of JL2.0. I have a couple paint schemes I am tossing around but need to narrow the vehicle down. My first choice was the '73 Caprice wagon, which I have been dying to use again. However, the Olds Vista Cruiser casting has only been used twice. Another one in contention is the '65 Chevy Wagon. I used that casting last in Wicked Wagons R1. To be fair, I have to consider a Ford so I will throw the Country Squire wagon into the mix. Decisions...decisions. What do you guys think?

The Citation tool model will be completed soon and I will post photos shortly. It will be on display at Lightning Fest too. I apologize that its release has been delayed but I wanted to find a good car. Not too many good ones left here in Chicago. Our model will be the 2-door hatchback and we'll release the X-11 and Citation II models between the years '81-'85. Did ya know that as the production of the X-11 decreased each year the car also got slower. Darn emission regulations! Check out the production numbers.

Received the shot samples in today. Overall, I am pretty happy with it and almost wish I would of tooled a casket. Only needs a few minor tweaks. I am going to adjust the front door outline a bit. The front passenger and driver doors on these things were always wider than the rear doors and there is a fine line when it comes to producing replicas where I scale a car down and some elements of a car do not look quite right in 1:64 scale. We'll get it done and you'll see many versions of this "delivery" in the F64 and JL2.0 lines. My hardest decision will come later...Black with Flames or a stock version for the first release?

Been talking with Maverick about releasing the A100 again with a cob web paint scheme on the top. Notice the difference in the type face of the Little Red Wagon too. Kinda neat! Just received some close to production samples of the JL 2.0 line. Take a look at this Beswick release. Yes, these do have a diecast chassis and will retail for $3.99. The first assortment also includes a Monza Spoiler a Black with Flames '10 Challenger that matches the Challenger from F64 release 2 and a Project in Progress Malibu, which I showed last month. The second JL 2.0 assortment has a stock Monza, which I cannot wait for.

Dodge Aspen

I was reviewing the Dodge Aspen tooling model today and pulled out some of my reference photos. I had a friend shoot this car a few months back and it was quite the piece of bondo art. Someone honed their skills and layed the rear quarters over and over, reshaping this beauty so it could roll a few more days. Not a bad job but after some harsh winters and years of sitting the layers were slowly falling off in large chunks each time the doors were closed. I don't know what was scarier, the layers of bondo or the date stamp on the photos.
Look for the JL casting to be released in late 2010.

Dodge Monaco

I was very excited today to get in the new '77 Monaco casting. Roscoe would be proud! The body is spot on and after a little cutting away of some window flash, I really got to appreciate the casting and the time I put into making this the most detailed casting to date. The wall thickness on the hood and body are perfect and I have been incorporating details to the underside of all new hoods. When released as a police car, this Monaco will have the option for a new lightbar and police wheels. This Dodge will make an awesome addition to the JL collector line and Forever 64 line. It's great to add another 4-door to the line because I have plenty of demolition derby paint schemes ready to roll out.

Oldsmobile has both!

In 1950, Oldsmobile had the high compression "Rocket" engine and the Hydra-matic drive but with colors combos like these who cares how fast your moving. I can stare at this "mint" all day!
I think the rubber tires look much better on this casting as most of the JL wheels could not squeeze into the tight wheel openings.

This pair of Mopars in R8 of F64 is sure to get your attention. I am pretty pumped about the Cuda as its the first time we have released with the strobe stripe and the correction proportions. Its a unique stripe and needs a little time to grow on you because it starts large on the front fender and tapers towards the rear. The Plum Crazy Challenger has a matte black top, silver scoop and rides on racing edge wheels.

Forever 64 R7

These are two of my favorites from R7 of F64. The '69 Camaro is an SS396 covered in metallic green. The '70 Camaro is a Motion Performance special that is dark metallic red with ribbon graphics. Joel has always just called it the "Ribbon Car". This MOTION release will also come with in an exclusive MOTION themed package. I drew the graphics for this "Ribbon Car" back in 2002 when I worked on the 1:18 scale American Muscle release and luckily I saved the file so I only had to scale down. It can be a little tricky to align all of those ribbons. Some of the other stars of the assortment are a BFGoodrich delivery truck, a Project in Progress '66 Charger and a white and gold '84 Firebird.

In the first release of the JL2.0 line you will get to see the Malibu for the first time with a diecast chassis. It also happens to be a Project in Progress that is just waiting for a complete restoration. It has a primer hood and fender and a little bondo here and there. If you have been waiting to get over to your local dealer to buy the new 2010 Viper in Toxic Orange you better do it soon. Or wait for the more affordable version that I am releasing in a couple months. This is the first release of the 2010 Dodge Viper in the JL line. Pretty much the same as the 2008 and 2009 models but there is the option for double racing stripes that taper as they roll over the hood and front of the car. I am planning for 2-3 releases of the ACR later this year, too.

Over the last few years I have been able to work with many talented designers and through our Designer Series releases I recently got to team with Big Lou Tanahara. Our recent collaboration came about after Lou and I spoke about finding a JL car to go along with his new Sledster fladbed. By the way, the Sledster is amazing. I mentioned to him that I designed a custom Buick back when I working the Racing Champions hot rod line that would be a perfect fit and compliment the sled very nicely. After exchanging a few paint chips and some artwork we got it done. Look for the release of this custom Buick in R6 of the Forever 64 line and make sure you pick up a few extra so you can display one on the sled.
